Skiing the Dolomites: A bucket-list worthy trip!

Planning a ski trip with kids is a slippery slope that comes with double the challenges and rewards! A big factor in making it successful is finding a family-friendly resort that caters to skiers of all skill levels, has a variety of apres-ski activities, and has excellent ski schools. The Dolomiti Superski offers this and more. From breathtaking scenery to fine Italian dining on the slopes, it has everything to keep everyone entertained.

The top 2 villages to stay in are Cortina d´Ampeza and Val Gardena. We chose Ortisei in Val Gardena as its one of the largest and liveliest towns. The closest international airports are Milan and Venice, both about a 3.5 hour drive to Ortisei. A week-long trip is the ideal duration to allow the kids to advance their ski skills, get familiar with the slopes, and still have time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Here’s what not to miss!

  • Alpe Si Suisi: This ski area is perfect for a first-day warm up, and gives you enough time to settle the kids comfortably with their ski school. Don’t miss the Bullaccia slope, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Have lunch at Turonda Bistrot in Ortisei town, then take the kids to the funicular railway Resciesa for a 6 km Toboggan run.
  • Santa Christina: If you’re staying in Ortisei, start by taking the Gondola up to Seceda, then ski towards St Cristina. Explore the area and enjoy skiing down the World Cup-famous Saslong slope (black level). Have lunch at Emilio Comici´s, then head to La Longia slope to ski all the way back to Ortisei town.
  • Ski the Sella Ronda famous circuit: A definite must! Starting from Ciampinoi lift, follow the Sella Ronda signs to complete the circular ski route that takes you through several valleys and resort. Start first thing in the morning as it takes a full day to complete, and stop at Baita Panorama Hutte for lunch.
  • Piz Seteur: If you are looking for some fun on the slopes and long runs through forested areas, spend the day skiing around Selva and end your day at Piz Seteur restaurant where they have a DJ playing in the afternoon.
  • Monte Pana with kids: A fun ski park for kids with obstacles and an enchanted forest slope. Combine it with another activity such as horse-drawn sleigh ride to make it a fun day for the kids, ensuring they fall in love with the whole ski experience.

Hotel tip:  Consider Cavallino Bianco Family Spa Grand Hotel which has been voted the World’s Best Family Hotel numerous times. Our kids have fallen in love with LinoLand and want to go back there every year! From the moment you check in, everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable stay is provided. The extensive kids club is a dream for kids of all ages- including babies. They have a theatre, mini football pitch, cooking classes, a mini farm, a climbing wall and so much more. It will be hard to leave the hotel in the evening and miss out on the indoor and outdoor pools, the Spa and themed dinner nights. Although we are not typically fans of all-inclusive options, the a la carte options are diverse and the food quality is excellent. The ski school works directly with the kids club, so when you drop them off in the morning, you can go about your day knowing they are well taken care of. You won’t find the hotel on websites like booking.com; you can only book it through their website https://www.cavallino-bianco.com
