Marrakesh

A family trip to Marrakesh is a captivating blend of vibrant culture, rich history & enchanting landscapes. Throw in the wonder of young curious minds for exciting memories and stories that last a lifetime. A stay of 4 to 5 days is ideal to explore everything that the city has to offer while having enough time to relax and explore surrounding attractions. Here’s what not to miss:

  • Jardin Majorelle & Modern Marrakesh: Start your day at Jarding Majorelle, a beautiful garden established by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 2001. Make sure to buy tickets in advance as the lines are busy, and add in entrance to Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts and the Musee Ives Saint Laurent. The museum descriptions are in French & Arabic, so having an English-speaking guide is recommended. The kids will enjoy learning about the costumes, craftwork, jewels & musical instruments of the Berber traditions, and the serene walks through the garden.
  • Koutoubia Mosque & the Saadian Tombs: Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in the city built during the reign of the Almohad Caliphate in the 12th century. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and water fountains. The Saadian Tombs are the resting place of the Saadian dynasty, who ruled Morocco in the 16th century. Both visits are short, and can be done in a couple of hours.
  • Bahia Palace: Located next to the souks, the palace showcases traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, with colourful tiles and wooden ceilings and extensive gardens.
  • Souks Adventure: No trip to Marrakesh is complete without a visit to the bustling souks. Make sure to go very early or late in the afternoon. We felt very safe throughout; however, be careful of motorcycles speeding their way through the streets. Also, our guide advised not to interact with street performers who showcase monkeys and snakes for hygiene reasons. Stop for lunch at one of the surrounding rooftop restaurants such as Café Des Épices to unwind and soak in the views.
  • Day trip to Agafay Desert: There are many camp options to choose from when deciding to go to the Agafay Desert. They all offer exciting activities such as Camel rides, ATV/Buggy excursions & dinners with a show. After careful research, we chose Al Kamar Camp for their beautiful infinity pool, solid reviews & their communication with us prior to our visit. Make sure to order the sandwiches by the pool for lunch (the best we’ve had!) and stay for the Moroccan menu for dinner to catch the show and relax by the fire-pit.
  • Traditional Moroccan Hammam: A perfect ´me´ time while the kids are with your other half!

**Hotel Tip: Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakesh– A luxury oasis, 20 minutes away from most major attractions. The staff went above & beyond to make us feel right at home. You definitely need to stay in for a day or two to make use of the countless facilities and activities. The kids specially enjoyed the animals at the hotels´ own organic farm, the Kids Club & the heated pool.

** Another option is to stay in a traditional Riad (a Moroccan villa with an indoor garden & courtyard, they are beautiful)- we opted for the more convenient option with kids.
