Planning a family safari comes with its own set of challenges—it’s a bucket list adventure that requires careful consideration to ensure it’s enjoyable and safe for everyone, especially with kids involved. We had been planning to take our kids on a safari for years, so when the time finally came, we wanted to be sure we chose the right place for our family. With so many options to choose from, we focused on what mattered most to us: finding a family-friendly lodge in a great location that had everything we needed to make the trip comfortable and memorable for everyone.
Our stay at TAASA Lodge turned out to be so much more than just a vacation—it’s a place that has forever captured our hearts, and the kids haven’t stopped talking about it since we got back!
The Perfect Spot for Wildlife and the Great Migration
TAASA Lodge is tucked away in the Northern Serengeti, making it the perfect spot for witnessing the Great Migration. Located within a game-rich protected wildlife area, the lodge offers unique opportunities like night drives—an experience generally not permitted in the Serengeti. This private setting also means you can spot animals without the crowds, ensuring a more intimate and immersive wildlife experience..
The Kids’ Adventure of a Lifetime
Our kids (and us!) had the time of our lives! The team at TAASA Lodge went above and beyond to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and boundless enthusiasm. The kids were excited by the activities available—cooking classes, arts and crafts, archery, and playing football with local Maasai children in the nearby village of Ololosokwan. It wasn’t just fun; it was a meaningful cultural exchange that left a lasting impression on them.
Immersing in Maasai Culture
One of the most special parts of the trip was connecting with the local Maasai community. We had the privilege of visiting the home of one of our guides in the nearby Maasai village of Ololosokwan, where many of the TAASA staff are from. We toured a local school, and the kids were fascinated by the different way of life, which sparked deep conversations about culture, community, and giving back. The lodge is partnered with an NGO called Explore With Purpose, who’s collaborative involvement in local initiatives, such as providing clean water to the village and supporting education through the building of classrooms, dormitories and more, made our stay feel even more meaningful. Delicious Food and Unmatched Hospitality
The food was absolutely amazing! We enjoyed some of the best meals we’ve ever had, and even the kids couldn’t resist ordering from the adult menu because everything was so delicious. TAASA Lodge is an all-inclusive destination, so everything is included when you book. One of our favorite moments was having a picnic breakfast in the bush—surrounded by the stunning Serengeti, it felt like something out of a dream. Our guides, Dominique and tracker Loya, were exceptional, making our game drives comfortable and enjoyable every step of the way. They were always ready with a warm smile and genuinely happy to help with anything we needed.
Peace of Mind for Parents
As parents, it was so reassuring to know the kids were in great hands during our stay. While we chose to do the game drives together as a family, TAASA Lodge also offers options for parents to enjoy some adult time while the kids embark on their own exciting adventures with dedicated team members. We were fortunate to have Kezia take care of our family, and our kids are still in touch with her via WhatsApp—they absolutely loved her!
When to Visit
We visited during the dry season, from June to early September, which was the perfect time to see the Great Migration. The weather was ideal, with clear roads and no mud to contend with.
Getting There
You can either road trip in a safari jeep through the Serengeti or take a bush flight to reach TAASA Lodge. We flew into Kilimanjaro International Airport and spent a few nights in Arusha to recover from the travel. From there, we drove to Ngorongoro for a few nights, made a stop in Central Serengeti, and then continued north to TAASA.
A Home Away From Home
Our time at TAASA Lodge was more than just a family trip—it was an experience that brought us closer together and gave us memories we’ll cherish forever. The kids are still excitedly talking about the wildlife they saw and the friends they made. If you’re considering a family safari, we can’t recommend TAASA Lodge highly enough.
